Comparing spruces using traits and genome data

In brief

Begin with identity. Open *Picea abies* and *Picea glauca* and check scientific names, source and rank. If another catalogue accepts a different name, preserve its treatment separately with a citation. A similar common name or a shared genus does not make records interchangeable. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5]

Read and explore

Ask one question at each level. Needles, shoots and cones are useful for examining external traits; ecological comparisons need observation context and provenance. Compare the same organs and stages, measurements in compatible units and photographs with clear captions. Forest Service accounts help explain the species' biology, while retaining their dates and geographic scope.

At the genomic level, compare assemblies and annotations from particular samples. The 2013 *Picea abies* genome paper connected its large genome with accumulated repetitive elements, rather than a proportional increase in gene number. It illustrates why genome length is not a scale of organismal complexity.

The *Picea glauca* paper from that year describes a separate sequencing assembly. Its BioProject connects sequences, samples and assemblies; these levels should not be collapsed into a species name. For a current comparison, open the precise assembly record and preserve its version. Use the historical paper to explain the work performed.

Try the comparison

Try it. Create a comparison of the two spruces. For each trait, record the organ, unit, conditions and source. Leave fields unknown if comparable measurements are unavailable. Add an available genome record for each species, with sample, accession, version and assembly level. Save the comparison and explain which rows are actually comparable.

    State what remains unknown

Check your understanding. A gene missing from one annotation does not establish biological loss. A difference between samples need not describe every tree of the two species. Map-record counts are not the area of a native range. A useful result can include open questions: explicit missing evidence is more informative than a complete table of incompatible values.

Worked result: a comparison with explicit gaps

A useful completed comparison can include a sourced needle description for each species and two separate assembly rows, while leaving an unavailable measured trait empty. Label each row as species description, specimen measurement or assembly metadata. Compare only rows with compatible meaning and units. The result is the set of supported comparisons plus named gaps; filling every cell with a value from a different specimen would make the comparison less reliable.
