Inheritance foundations: the assumptions of a simple model

In brief

Begin with the illustrative cross Aa × Aa. Assume a single diploid locus, equal transmission probabilities for A and a from each parent, independent combination of gametes and no selection changing the proportions between the stated stages. A table gives expected genotypes. Translating them into phenotypes requires an additional dominance assumption.

    Activity

Build the Aa × Aa table under the stated assumptions. AA, Aa, aA and aa each have probability 1/4; grouping the two heterozygous outcomes gives 1:2:1. Only with the additional assumption of complete A dominance do expected phenotype proportions become 3:1. Label these as teaching-model probabilities, not measurements or a prediction for a small family or complex trait. Save the assumptions and explain how changing them can change the expectation.

      Self-assessment criterion

Genotype and phenotype are distinct; model assumptions are recorded; 3:1 is used only under complete dominance.
