Primates

In brief

Primates include lemurs, tarsiers, monkeys, apes and humans. Grasping adaptations and visual perception of space characterize the group: overlapping visual fields help assess depth. Hand and foot structure, posture and locomotion vary; a human foot is not organized like the grasping foot of a tree-dwelling primate. [2]

Primates: grasping, vision and varied movement

Reading this page

Members of an order are not successive stages towards humans. A classification branch shows group membership; an inference about ancestry needs phylogenetic evidence. Arranging pictures in a row does not establish an evolutionary sequence.

      This group in the catalogue

The installed Catalogue of Life places Primates at the rank of order. Accepted record col:3W7 belongs to COL26.7 Base, 2026-07-14. The authored scientific name is retained alongside the shorter name; navigation uses the record identifier.

The immediate parent here is Eutheria Gill, 1872 (infraclass). Preserve intermediate groups in the full path: a short list of principal ranks can omit them.

      From group to species

Prepared examples in this branch are Homo sapiens. Membership was checked in the same CoL release. Opening an example leads to its separate species record. Its geography, traits and sequences do not become properties of every member of the group.

      Next question

Choose an example and frame a question at species or specimen level. On the map, preserve the exact filter and observation source; in molecular searches, preserve assembly, gene and sequence version. If a dataset is unavailable, leave the question open. A missing service response does not establish biological absence.

        Classification and name provenance.

A catalogue name does not establish a genome, protein or measurement. Missing records do not mean a trait or gene is absent from the organism.
