Hominidae

In brief

Hominidae includes humans, orangutans, gorillas, chimpanzees and bonobos. Gibbons belong to the broader ape group but not this family. “Hominid” should therefore not be used as a synonym restricted to humans and their fossil relatives. [2]

Hominidae: humans and other great apes

Anatomical similarities and genetic evidence connect humans with other great apes. This relationship reflects shared ancestors, rather than human descent from a living chimpanzee.

Reading this page

Family, genus and species names refer to different classification levels. A sequence-similarity percentage requires the compared region and method; this page does not calculate a general percentage of organism identity.

    Try it

Open Homo from the family and then an individual species. Compare its classification source with the source of an available molecular record: these provide different kinds of evidence.

      This group in the catalogue

The installed Catalogue of Life places Hominidae at the rank of family. Accepted record col:6256T belongs to COL26.7 Base, 2026-07-14. The authored scientific name is retained alongside the shorter name; navigation uses the record identifier.

The immediate parent here is Hominoidea Gray, 1825 (superfamily). Preserve intermediate groups in the full path: a short list of principal ranks can omit them.

      From group to species

Prepared examples in this branch are Homo sapiens. Membership was checked in the same CoL release. Opening an example leads to its separate species record. Its geography, traits and sequences do not become properties of every member of the group.

      Next question

Choose an example and frame a question at species or specimen level. On the map, preserve the exact filter and observation source; in molecular searches, preserve assembly, gene and sequence version. If a dataset is unavailable, leave the question open. A missing service response does not establish biological absence.
