Bacteria
In brief
Bacterial DNA occupies a region called the nucleoid, without a surrounding nuclear envelope. A cell membrane separates the cell contents from the environment, while ribosomes assemble proteins. Most bacteria have a wall containing peptidoglycan. These features help explain cell organization, but a flagellum or capsule should not be added to every representative. [2]

Bacteria: cells without an enclosed nucleus
Bacterial cells include spherical, rod-shaped and spiral forms; a similar shape alone does not establish close ancestry.

Reading this page
A broad group does not specify every strain's properties. When opening a genome or protein, check the full name, strain and sample identifier. A DnaA record for one strain does not establish molecular evidence for every occurrence of the species.

This group in the catalogue
The installed Catalogue of Life places Bacteria at the rank of domain. Accepted record col:CRRY6 belongs to COL26.7 Base, 2026-07-14. The authored scientific name is retained alongside the shorter name; navigation uses the record identifier.

This record has no parent row in the installed index. That is a boundary of this classification representation, not a conclusion that deeper evolutionary relationships are absent.

This index version contains 8 direct child records. This counts the next level of the tree, not all species, organisms, observations or studied genomes in the group.

From group to species
Prepared examples in this branch are Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis. Membership was checked in the same CoL release. Opening an example leads to its separate species record. Its geography, traits and sequences do not become properties of every member of the group.

Next question
Choose an example and frame a question at species or specimen level. On the map, preserve the exact filter and observation source; in molecular searches, preserve assembly, gene and sequence version. If a dataset is unavailable, leave the question open. A missing service response does not establish biological absence.
