Fungi
In brief
Fungi obtain organic compounds from their surroundings and absorb nutrients across cell surfaces. Their cell walls contain chitin and glucans; fungal cells have no chloroplasts of their own. Fungi include single-celled yeasts and forms that grow as threads called hyphae. A mass of hyphae forms a mycelium. [2]

Fungi: absorption and growth through hyphae
Reading this page
A photograph of a visible mushroom need not show the whole organism. Check what each image depicts, its developmental stage and its scale. An interaction with another organism requires a source, while a protein record alone does not establish a fungus's ecological role.

Try it
Compare images of yeast with an available fungus showing mycelium. Locate the structural labels and avoid transferring measurements between different specimens.

This group in the catalogue
The installed Catalogue of Life places Fungi at the rank of kingdom. Accepted record col:F belongs to COL26.7 Base, 2026-07-14. The authored scientific name is retained alongside the shorter name; navigation uses the record identifier.

The immediate parent here is Eukaryota (Chatton, 1925) Whittaker & Margulis, 1978 (domain). Preserve intermediate groups in the full path: a short list of principal ranks can omit them.

This index version contains 54 direct child records. This counts the next level of the tree, not all species, organisms, observations or studied genomes in the group.

From group to species
Prepared examples in this branch are Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Membership was checked in the same CoL release. Opening an example leads to its separate species record. Its geography, traits and sequences do not become properties of every member of the group.

Next question
Choose an example and frame a question at species or specimen level. On the map, preserve the exact filter and observation source; in molecular searches, preserve assembly, gene and sequence version. If a dataset is unavailable, leave the question open. A missing service response does not establish biological absence.
